erzulie

(ongoing)

In the spring of 2004, I was part of a mission of Act Up-Paris in Cameroon to produce the second issue of the newsletter "Protocol South". During our exchanges with the activists of the fight against the AIDS of the country, my colleague and I learn that the Douala sex workers are include in an inethical clinical research. It is the Law Ethics Network and Health (REDS) which informs us. The trial, led by the NGO Family Health International (FHI) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed to prove the preventive value of a molecule, tenofovir, from the Gilead laboratory. This trial will lead in 2012 to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a new revolutionary HIV prevention strategy...But before that, there will be a long struggle for these women to assert their rights.
Under the eye of Erzulie, the warrior, the fierce protector of women and children, especially lesbians and prostitutes.

From this story, the more general question arises : How does the pharmaceutical industry and therefore global capitalism treat women in the South ?

"In this world, apart from the Black woman, what other creature must have included the consciousness of so much hatred for its survival while moving forward?" Audre Lorde - Sister Outsider.
